The Names Game
This is a drinking game played over a circle of players using the names of famous people.
The player to begin the game simply has to come up with the name of any well-known person or celebrity and then begins by saying ‘to my right…’ or ‘to my left…’ followed by the name of the person they chose. The player sitting in the direction specified then takes their turn.
The next player has to think of another name using the first letter of the previous person’s surname to be the first letter of the first name of the new person. For example, if the player who started said ‘Brad Pitt’, the next person could say something like ‘Pamela Anderson’. The play continues in this manner, in the same direction.
When a player has their turn and they are trying to come up with the name, they need to be drinking solidly until they think of a name. This begins from as soon as it is their turn to the moment they say the name.
There are some other rules: If both the first name and surname of the celebrity begin with the same letter, then the direction of the game is reversed and the previous player gets a turn. If a player says a name of a person that is popularly known by one name such as ‘Cher’, then the next player is skipped out and the turn moves on to the player after him. Play continues in the same direction.
Repeating a name is against the rules and it is the challenge of all the players to remember the names that have already been said and if someone fails to comply with this, they need to down the remainder of their drink.
It is also a good idea to stick to only using the names of people who at least one other person in the group has heard of to save confusion and prevent cheating!
